Mixing Reality with the Digital World: The New Frontier of Augmented Reality
After several false starts, Augmented Reality (AR) is finally making its way into everyday life. If you’ve ever seen digital graphics pop up in the camera on your phone, that’s AR in action—it’s all about mixing digital content with the real world, whether you’re looking at your phone or wearing a headset.
Science fiction writers have been envisioning AR for decades. In William Gibson’s ‘Neuromancer,’ characters use implants to see digital information layered over the real world. Neal Stephenson’s ‘Snow Crash’ described AR headsets that could instantly identify objects, such as planes in the sky (although his depiction of the wearers was far from complementary).
One of the most famous examples of AR in the real world is Pokémon GO. If you played it—or know someone who did—you’ll remember chasing digital creatures that only appeared when you looked through your phone’s camera. Suddenly, your local park or street corner became a place to catch Pikachu.
Newer apps like AR-TAGZ take things a step further, letting people leave virtual notes that others can find when they’re in the right spot. A coffee shop posts a digital coupon at its door, or a charity sets up a treasure hunt with clues that pop up in the park. Even friends can leave inside jokes at their favourite hangouts.

In 2013, Google launched Glass, a pair of smart glasses that delivered hands-free AR information in the wearer’s field of view. It was discontinued a couple of years later due to the high cost and a privacy backlash against the “hidden” camera, which saw bans in bars and cinemas. Now, Meta (read Facebook) has picked up where Google left off, teaming up with Ray-Ban in 2021. Their first smart glasses were pretty basic, but in 2025, the Meta Display arrived—these are true AR glasses, with a full-colour display built right into the lens. Suddenly, the science fiction started to look a lot more like reality.
At its heart, AR is about putting the digital —like pictures, sounds, or videos—right into the world you see around you. Hold up your phone or put on special glasses, and suddenly, the ordinary becomes extraordinary. It’s interactive, it’s fun, and it’s changing how we experience everything from games to work.

- Healthcare: Medical professionals are adopting AR for surgical planning and training. Surgeons can access vital information and 3D anatomical models within their field of vision, enhancing precision and improving outcomes.
- Entertainment: Beyond gaming, AR enhances various entertainment experiences, such as concerts and live events, by incorporating interactive digital elements that engage audiences in novel ways.
